Dave Nachmanoff

Dave grew up surrounded by the active folk scene of Northern Virginia and Washington D.C. during the 1960s and 70s, where he was exposed to a variety of musical traditions and was inspired by performers like Pete Seeger and Arlo Guthrie.
At age 9, Dave wrote his first song — the same year he met the legendary Libba Cotton ("Freight Train") and was invited to accompany her on stage. Throughout the 1970s and 80s, he continued to write and perform, both solo and with several bands in the D.C. area, London, and New York City.

He studied music and philosophy at Columbia and Oxford universities, earned a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of California, Davis (1997), and promptly retired from academia to dedicate himself to music.

"Dr. Dave" also released his debut CD, "Candy Shower," in 1997 and followed this up with a live CD recording, "Snapshots" (1998). Both albums met with critical acclaim and tracks from the CDs have received honors in national songwriting competitions and airplay on commercial, public, and grass-roots community radio stations, nationwide.

Having paid his dues playing at bars, restaurants and coffeehouses, Dave has built up an active mailing list of over 4,000 fans throughout the country and is now performing as an opening and featured act at some of the better-known listening rooms, performing arts centers, and college venues.

For these shows, he draws upon his mailing list and live radio spots to successfully promote each event. Dave is also a regular fixture at folk and music festivals from coast to coast, where he has been able to fill a diversity of roles as a soloist performing his own songs, as a roving house musician providing accompaniment for other scheduled performers, and as a facilitator, leading songwriting and performing workshops for people of all ages.
As a performer, Dave is full of energy, personality, and fun. His shows are "family friendly" and appeal to people of all ages and walks of life. Drawing from the best of his East Coast folk heritage, he has a knack for transforming a roomful of passive listeners into active participants. With a repertoire of several hundred original songs covering a broad spectrum of topics and musical genres, Dave is able to tailor each concert to his listeners. He backs his songs with virtuoso playing on acoustic guitar and other instruments, and intersperses his concerts with stories of the road and the occasional philosophical insight.
